IV Sedation Near You

Many patients dread visiting the dentist due to fear and anxiety.

Patients even have these feelings just from scheduling an appointment, which can sometimes prevent them from receiving the oral health care they need. This kind of anxiety usually stems from fear of pain, sensitive teeth, a poor experience, or just a general feeling of discomfort. That’s why at Apple Dental, we offer the option of receiving IV sedation to our patients.

Some patients who do not fear the dentist can still feel some anxiety when undergoing specific procedures. Root canal therapy, wisdom tooth extraction, and other procedures are most commonly feared, which is why we offer IV sedation near you.

What is IV Sedation?

When receiving IV sedation, your dentist will use a fine, thin needle to insert a tube into your vein. This is usually located on your arm or sometimes on the back of your hand. Your dentist will then withdraw the needle, leaving the tube in place. The sedatives are pumped through the tube and into your bloodstream. You will start to feel light-headed once the sedatives get into your bloodstream. This process is safe and comfortable and allows you to feel relaxed during dental procedures.

IV sedation does not put you under, but it helps you become calm and relaxed before and during your treatment. During the procedure, you will still be awake, allowing you to be responsive to your dentist whenever asked a question. With IV sedation, you are likely to forget most of the procedure.

Anti-anxiety sedatives are also known as benzodiazepines or “benzos.” Benzos can have three effects on a patient. These effects include:

  • Reduced anxiety
  • Makes you sleepy
  • Causes partial or total memory loss

The dosage needed depends on the patient and will be determined by your dentist.
